how to stop power struggles

This is also me!

My Therapy Style

I approach my work as a therapist and parent coach with a blend of personal experience AND professional expertise. I am direct in helping parents understand themselves better- their emotions and past experiences that guide the way they engage and respond to their children. It is important to me that when you are with me (virtually, in the office, or in your own home) you and/or your child are comfortable- I’m talking “kick off your shoes and sit cross-legged on the chair or floor,” or “not worried about the crumbs on the carpet or folding the mountain of laundry on the couch in preparation for my visit” kind of comfortable! I do my best to be myself in a way that encourages the same from you and your family.

I will never promise perfection. Let’s be real… pregnancy and parenting perfection is a myth. Real life with kids, especially young kids, is a MESS. I want you to bring that mess to our meetings (or let me come and visit it in person!). I’ll use my expertise, and a good amount of humor and silliness, to help you develop your family’s unique tool kit for surviving AND thriving.

“The Parent-child connection is the most powerful mental health intervention known to mankind.”

— Bessel van der Kolk

My Approach

My clinical approach is guided by attachment theory and current neuroscience and resilience research. In my experience, the most powerful healing for very young children happens within their attachment relationships. Knowing this, sessions with me are typically either dyadic (parent and child attend therapy sessions together) and play-based or separate parent coaching sessions where I support and guide parents in learning, implementing, and reflecting on ways to support their child’s unique developmental, emotional, and body’s needs. Through play, book reading, puppets, and art, I integrate cognitive behavioral therapy techniques (changing thinking patterns), narrative therapy (changing a child’s “story”), and expressive therapy techniques to give children and parents the tools to process thoughts and feelings. I am passionate about helping parents understand their child’s behavior and needs, feel more confident, and experience more joyful connections with their children.

In my work with new parents who are experiencing perinatal mood or anxiety disorders, or challenges related to fostering or adopting a child, I utilize a mindful approach to psychotherapy, along with cognitive behavioral techniques, to helping new parents develop the tools to find their new identity as a parent, manage their mood, and regain a sense of control and well-being.
